Abraham Colles. A portrait of Abraham Colles (1773-1843), Irish surgeon who devised treatments for aneurysm and defined a 'Colles fracture' and 'Colles Law'. He developed the technique of tying (with a ligature) large arteries affected by aneurysm, a condition caused by abnormal dilation of a blood vessel. He defined 'Colles fracture', a fracture of the radius (a bone just above the wrist). This is the most common type of fracture in people over the age of forty because they commonly suffer from osteoporosis (brittle-bone disease). His 'Colles Law' states that a healthy mother may bear a syphilitic child without becoming infected.
