Treaty talks in the cabinet room of No 10 Downing Street in London in 1921. On the left is the British team including Lloyd George and Winston Churchill. To the right are heads of the Irish delegation, Michael Collins and Arthur Griffith, who greatly impressed the British representatives. With regard to the Treaty, he himself was fully committed to and satisfied with it and genuinely convinced that its terms were the best that Ireland could realistically have hoped to achieve. He bitterly resented the opposition to it from republican purists – especially de Valera.
