IIn 1862, Giuseppe Garibaldi with 3,000 volunteers in a march from Sicily towards Rome, faced attacking Italian Troops during the attle of Aspromonte, a battle that took place on 29 August 1862, and was an inconclusive episode of the Italian unification process. In the battle, the Royal Italian Army defeated Giuseppe Garibaldi's army of volunteers, Garibaldi was wounded and taken prisoner, but subsequently released.
