Etretat, Normandy, France. Stone plaque commemorating the ill-fated 1927 flight of aviators Nungesser and Coli.

A picturesque seaside resort in the department of Seine-Maritime, Etretat lies on the English Channel at the western end of Normandy's Côte-d’Albâtre (Alabaster Coast). In May 1927, French aviators Charles Nungesser and François Coli set out from Paris in an attempt to complete the first non-stop transatlantic flight from east to west. They and their aircraft, the Oiseau Blanc, were last seen over the cliffs of Etretat, where a small museum now commemorates their unsuccessful expedition.
