Width: 14 3/4 in. Display Dimensions: 9 1/2 in. x 14 3/4 in. ( cm x cm) Publisher: Nishimuraya Yohachi Credit Line: Gift of the University Women's Club Label Copy: 'The poem on which Hokusai based his print composition translates as follows:Ah! The foot-drawn trailOf the mountain-pheasants tailDropped like down-curved branch!Through this long, long-dragging nightMust I keep my couch alone? The illustration catches the tense and weary spirit of the poem, and it is filled with visual references to the poetic imagery. The long, long plume of the campfire smoke, for example, suggests the mountain-pheasants tail. Of particular note is the man who peeks out from the window of the cottage, unable to sleep; he is the lonely poet, fascinated by the exhausting pre-dawn work of the fishermen who drag their nets uphill.'
