On receiving the bulls appointing him to the seeof St. Paul, he was consecrated in the Cathedralof St. Louis, on the 24th of July, 1859, by Arch-bishop Kenrick, and was installed in St. Paul on the29th. He entered at once on his duties, studyingthe condition of his diocese. He addressed his clergyand people in a touching pastoral, on the 9tli ofNovember, urging fidelity to their religion, andthe use and diffusion of good books and dwelt on the religious condition of those aroundus, buried in error, not through their own fault,. Among theincoming population were many German Catholics,and the Benedictines received additional Fathers tomeet this want. Father Bruno founded a new mis-sion at Shakopee in 1859, and soon had churches orchapels to attend : St. Victorias, St. Josephs atWaconia, Chaska, St. Bernards, and other points ;while Father Cornelius Wittman was equally diligentin another district. Father Demetrius Marogna, afterorganizing the monastery at St. Cloud, went to , where the Benedictines soon had a thriving Ger-man congregation, a church having been erected in1856 by Rev. G. Keller.
