About one and a half kilos, of sheet zinc. in pieces about i sq. cm. in area are placed in the annularspace A, and hydrochloric or sulphuric acid of about fivetimes normal strength, containing 10 ec. Cobalt chloridesol. per litre is allowed to flow on to it from the globularfunnel B, by turning the cocks C and D and the stopper E,so as to permit the transference of the expelled gas fromthe lower vessel to the upper by means of the tube F (afterthe manner of a percolator). The tube of the stopper E being prolonged nearly to thebottom of the funnel, serves to maintain a constant head, acting on the principle of a Slarriottes bottle, which, indeed, may be substituted for it when the apparatus is to be usedcontinuously for a long period. The U tube G, filled with mercury, is designed to allow theescape of any small quantity of gas evolved after cutting offthe supply of acid if the cock on the exit tube H shouldhappen to be closed.
