The Milky Way, 15th century artwork. Engraving of Greek goddesses representing the mythological origins of the Milky Way, with Latin text. According to Greek and Roman legends, the Milky Way is milk from the breast of the goddess Rhea (Ops). The black asterisks show the position of the stars that make up the Milky Way. This artwork is from the 1482 edition of Hyginus's Poeticon Astronomicon (Poetic Astronomy). This 1st-century BC star atlas was republished several times in the medieval period with woodcut engravings of the stars and constellations.
