Although bricks and mortar retailing is generally having a hard time, pound and budget shops round the country are doing exceptionally well. The people doing the buying are not, as you might think, old age pensioners struggling to make ends meet. Only 8 per cent of pound shoppers are over 65. Surprisingly, most of the customers are between 25 and 34. And it seems that men like these shops more than women, in the proportion of 55% to 45%. Some big chains dominate the market but they have to face fierce competition from hosts of smaller operators.
