It was considered a great privilege to the membersof the Companies when, in March, 1904, Colonel Cantliegraciously accepted the position of Hon. Lieutenant-Colonel Commandant. Colonel Cantlie has always beenintimately associated with the Volunteer Medicalarrangements of the British Army, he being among thefirst to perceive the need of more extensive ambulancearrangements for our Volunteer Forces. Maidstone Companies, (Vols.) 43 interest in the welfare of the Companies, and his genialpresence and breezy speeches are always much appre-ciated at the various social gatherings in connectionwith the Corps which he frequently attends. Bernard Dalby Hobson, Esq., was gazetted to acommission in the Companies as Lieutenant and Quarter-master in May, 1904. The Monckton Drill Hall was formally opened in thepresence of a distinguished company by the Mayor,Alderman W. Morling, on Wednesday, July 20th, 1904,and has proved a great boon to the men and to thosecharged with their instruction. In celebration of theevent, His Worship very hospitably entertained themembers of the Corps in the new building.
