Ruins of abandoned Soviet military beach fortifications and sand dunes at Cape Kolka, Latvia

Cape Kolka, at the northern tip of western Latvia, is where the Gulf of Rīga meets the Baltic Sea. It is part of Slitere National Park. It was formerly a Soviet military base and was closed to both visitors and locals alike. Remnants of Soviet military installations remain. In 2005, the coast experienced an enormous storm which uprooted many trees along the coast. The fallen trees, strewn across the deserted beach, remain on the beach.
