This painting, titled The Last Match, was done by the Scottish artist William Small, who was born in 1843. In 1865, Small journeyed to London to see an enlarged field for his activities. The scene on which this painting is based was witnessed by the artist in Galway. It shows an Irish peasant returning from market with his pig, stopping to light his last match to his hat, while his daughter shielded the precious flame from the wind with her cloak.
