A native of oneslave State, and connectedby marriage witli anotlier(Georgia), it was hoped onthe one side he would be-tray his trust, and fearedon the other that he wouldresign it. Thouglitless ofthe world, and regardlessof the ties of family andfriendship, he kept a sin-gle eye upon his presentduty, and won the un-dying honor which everfalls to faith and firmnessshown on great occasions.^ With his little band, all of whom provedtrue, he determined to defend his flag and maintain his post.
