Cyrille Fournier (France, ESA) examining plants in the greenhouse area of the isolation facility during the 105-day second stage study of the Mars-500 project. The Mars-500 project was conducted between 2007 and 2011 at the Russian Institute of Biomedical Problems (IBMP) in Moscow, Russia. The second stage was held from 31 March to 14 July 2009, with six crew members placed in an isolation facility to simulate a mission to Mars. A third stage was held over 520 days from 3 June 2010 to 4 November 2011. The aim was to study the psychological and medical aspects of long-duration human spaceflights.
