Colorful carpets once covered the vast floor of the monumental Suleymaniye Mosque that was built in the 1550s in Istanbul, Turkey. It is the city's largest mosque and an icon of Ottoman Empire architecture. During the extensive 2008-2010 renovation of this famous Muslim worship center, the traditional carpets were replaced by modern wall-to-wall carpet woven with a motif designating individual places for worshippers to kneel and touch their foreheads to the floor. Visitors are welcome to visit inside the mosque after removing their shoes, except during prayer times. Historical photo.
