Bunion assessment. Coloured X-rays showing a 70-year-old woman's feet with bunions being assessed to see if surgery is needed. A bunion (hallux valgus) is a deformity characterised by sideways deviation of the big toe, creating a protruding joint between the toe and the metatarsal bone. The lines show the degree of deformity. The normal angle for the lines shown here is between 20 and 30 degrees, with the angle here being greater than 35 degrees. The surgery (a bunionectomy) involves the placement of screws to preserve the straightening of the joint.
