Close-up of the bronze entrance door of the Church of Our Lady of Consolation with sculptures representing St Augustine and St Thomas, Genoa, Italy

The church of Our Lady of Consolation and Saint Vincent martyr owes its origin to the settlement in the Ligurian capital, in 1473, of a reformed congregation within the Augustinian Order, the Congregation of Consolation. The present church of the Consolation is a rebuilding of another older church, which stood in another area outside the historic districts of the city and was demolished in 1681 to reinforce the defensive walls of the city. The construction of the new church took place from 1684 to 1706 in the central Via XX Settembre. On the entrance bronze door there are two beautiful sculptures in high relief depicting Saint Augustine and Saint Thomas of Villanova. In the left door Augustine holds with his left hand his book De Civitate Dei ("The City of God"). On the right, St Thomas of Villanova, the Augustinian bishop, is depicted in his typical iconography that sees him giving alms to the poor.
