The time was oneof great political activity, and his Lectures on theRestrictive System, depicting the evils of the tariffsystem, were very popular, notonly with liis students, but withthe Southern public, and arethought to have had much weightin shaping the opposition to thetariff laws of 1828 and 1832. Hisessay in favor of slavery had amarked effect, it is said, on theslavery question. But his great-est work was his Digest of theLaws, Customs, Manners, and In-stitutions of Ancient and ModernNations, embracing lectures de-livered to his class. Dr. HerbertB. Adams pronounces this workthe most, thorough and compre-hensive c ourse on history of whichhe has found any record duringthis earlj period. Dr. Dew con-tributed largely to the South-ern Review.
