In 1890 Hjalmar Lundbohm the geologist, came to Kiruna to investigate the iron ore deposits. These led to the discovery of a vast iron field. Lundbohm became the manager of LKAB the "Luossavaara Kiirunavaara Aktie Bolaget", which is now state owned. The Kiirunavaara mine is the world's largest deep mine, with over 400 kms of two lane underground roadways, and 40 kms of railways.
