I have already spoken of the broadlysagittate character of the leaves of our native plant (Arummaculatum) taking it as typical of the genus, or at least of aspecial section of it; closely related to it comes ArumArisarum of the south of Europe and A. azoricum of theAzores ; in both of these species the dark blotches, which giverise to the specific name of our British plant, are absent; thelobes of the leaves are more rounded, the terminal or fleshyportion of the spadix is cylindrical not club-shaped, and thespathe is broader, bluntly pointed, and cucnllate. Arum italicum (the Italian Aram), with sagittate leavessimilar to the preceding species, is of much larger growth ; the. The Italian Arum (A. italicum). principal veins are blotched with yellow, giving the leaves a marbledappearance, and as they are produced very early in the season, attaining their full development in the month ot March, they forman attractive feature in the flower border. The spatho is yellowish, green in colour, fully 1 in. across—in fact, twice the size of that ofour wild plant, the fleshy termination of the spadix being of acreamy-white colour. In the autumn, when the leaves have diedaway, the groups of scarlet berries, supported on 10 or12 in. long, have a very attractive appearance, which they retain fora considerable time. It is a native of Spain, Portugal, Italy, andthe south of France. Occasionally we meet in our own woods witha very similar variegated form ot A. maculatnni, but it is smaller inevery respect than its Italian relative, which is a decidedly desirableplrt for cultivation.
