Callippe Fritillary Butterfly, ”, Orange, Black, White Silver, Insect


The Callippe Fritillary is an attractive butterfly with orange, yellow, black, and on the underside some silver, too. Seems to be fairly furry on its back and the proximal part of the wings adjacent to the body. About ” (5-6 cm) wingspan. Habitat prairies, mountains, and alpine areas. Host is the violet. Found in at least Oregon and Washington from the Cascade Mountains eastward. United States, North America. ---- The plant in the photo is Tansy Ragwort. Bushy topped plant 1-4’ (30-122 cm) tall with bright deep-yellow composite flowers, .5-1” (12-25 mm) diameter; narrow deep-yellow ray flowers (~12) and a center of brownish yellow disk flowers. Ray flower petals do not overlap each other. Involucre narrowly bell-shaped, the bracts slender, green, usually tipped with black, a few shorter bracts usually found at the base. Plant is mostly on a single stem, but can consist of more than one main stem. Leaves are deeply pinnately deeply notched, with teeth on the individual lobes, and a narrow “web-like” leaf band along the central rib of the leaf between lobes. Leaves evenly distributed along the stems.
