The Panathenaic Stadium, also known as Kallimarmaro (it means "beautiful marble") is a multi-purpose stadium in Athens, Greece. It is built entirely of marble. The original construction was built by the Athenian statesman Lykourgos (Lycurgus) in 330 BC, primarily for the Panathenaic Games. It was rebuilt in marble by Herodes Atticus, an Athenian Roman senator, by 144 AD and had a capacity of 50,000 seats. Kallimarmaro was excavated in 1869 and hosted 4 of 9 sports of the first modern Olympics in 1896. In 2004, when the Olympic Games returned to Greece, the stadium served again some venues. It is also the finishing point for the annual Athens Classic Marathon, the most emblematic Marathon Run in the world.
