Fruit fly eye. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) showing the numerous different lenses (ommatidia, spheres) that make up the compound eye of a fruit fly (Drosophila sp.). Each ommatidium is a simple eye that sends a signal to the fly's brain. The brain combines the thousands of images to form a mosaic view of the world. The image is not sharp but is excellent at detecting movement. Magnification: x500 when printed 10cm wide.
