And the fact that but a few of the stupendous worksof that astonishing epoch of civilization are preserved to us intact, while ourmeans of comparison are entirely inadequate to apply to the even more stupen-dous ruins that uprear themselves above the present level of die land, makes uscontemplate the achievements of that age with something akin to awe.
