The rooms on the ground floor were warmed by two fireplaces seton opposite sides of a large stone chimney whose massive founda-tions occupied a liberal space of the walled cellar beneath the build-ing. The old house was continued in use as the family kitchen andworkshop. The farm buildings were across the lane to the westward fromthe dwelling house. They consisted of a large barn, a separatebuilding used as a granary and hog house, which was supplied with acaldron kettle set in a furnace; a smaller building containing thecider-mill and still, and two long sheds for the shelter of the livestock.
