Jr., son of Samuel. and Hannah (Rcad-Comstock) Smith, wasoorn in Mendon (now called East Blackstonel September 24. 1806. and the old home-stead where he spent his boyhood is still standing and in good condition. He attendedthe old district schools : the sessions were short and only tor a few weeks in thewinter, but for his <iwn efforts and private study his education would have been verymeager. Hemarried in Uxbridge, Harriet Blackman. a descendant of John Dunham, one of tlieearly pioneers of Connecticut. Her grandfather Dunham was killed in the Rev-olutionary War. She had also three great-uncles who served in the Revolution, oneof whom. Samuel Dunham, lived to be one hundred years old, and was the oldestRevolutionary pensioner in Comiecticut when he died.
