Night view, illuminated Western Train Tram standing turning circle in front of Pleasure Beach Casino, Blackpool Illuminations
The White Tower Pleasure Beach Casino, in the background of the shot, is a Grade 2 reinforced concrete listed building, dating to 1937-40 and designed in the International Modern Style by Joseph Emberton for Leonard Thompson, owner of the Pleasure Beach. Despite its name the Casino, rather than gambling, houses a restaurant and other catering facilities. The Western Train Tram, standing in the turning circle at the Pleasure Beach, first ran in 1962 and was withdrawn from service in 1999. It returned for the switch-on of the 2008 Illuminations after a campaign by the Blackpool Gazette and renovation with the help of a £278,000 Heritage Lottery Fund. The tram was originally sponsored by ABC Weekend Television, whose illuminated logo lies under the funnel. In the North of England, in the early days of Independent Television, from 1956 until 1968, Granada ran the weekday schedules and ABC (Associated British Corporation) the weekend slot.
