Lagoon Nebula, M8, NGC 6523

Lagoon Nebula. Colored infrared image of the region of the Lagoon Nebula, or Messier 8. Most of the red nebulosity seen in optical images is missing in the infrared. The central bright region is the Hourglass Nebula, a hot region of ionized gas surrounding young type O stars, primarily Herschel 36. The lack of wide-scale nebulosity in infrared suggests that there is less molecular hydrogen flowing away from the nebula than in other similar systems. This image was made as part of the Two-Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) project.
