Predicted solar eclipse of 1778. Diagrams and text predicting the expected appearance of the solar eclipse of 24 June 1778. Instructions at lower right describe the use of solar projection or smoked glass to view the eclipse. The view at top is an orthographic projection of the eclipse viewed from the Sun. The view at bottom is that of the partial eclipse observed from Wisbech, the Isle of Ely, Cambridgeshire, UK. The labels indicate the eclipse's begining, middle, end, and contact points. Totality for this eclipse was visible from Mexico, the south-eastern USA, the North Atlantic, and northern Africa. These calculations and diagrams were prepared by a John Watte.
