On the 20th of April,General Banks occupied Opelousas. From Opelousas he pro-ceeded to Alexandria, on Red River, which place had been cap-tured by the fleet of Admiral Porter. In this expedition, theFourth Wisconsin was engaged; Colonel Paine having been putin command of a brigade in Emorys division, of which theFourth formed a part, the regiment was under the command ofColonel Bean. Returning from the Red River, General Banks, concentratedhis forces at Shrevesport, after the investment of Yicksburg, foran advance on Port Hudson. About the middle of May, all theavailable force near the river was transferred to Baton Rouge,twent3-two miles below Port Hudson, to assist in the reductionof that place.
