Recurrence of breast cancer. Close-up of the site of surgical removal (mastectomy) of a breast of an 80-year-old woman being treated for breast cancer. A new tumour (small lump) is growing at this site. The surrounding skin is inflamed by radiotherapy treatment. Patients diagnosed with breast cancer require follow-up care for life to detect new tumours such as this one. Recurrence rates depend upon several factors, including how successful the surgery was at removing the primary tumour, and whether the cancer has spread (metastasized). Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Regular self-examination and diagnostic scans can lead to early diagnosis and surgical removal.
