Wellington was compelled to retreat to thevillage of Waterloo, nine miles from Brussels, where he tookup his stand. There on Sunday, June 18th, 1815, he wasattacked by had drawnup his army in squaresalong a highway, theapproach being defendedby two strong posts onthe right and left of hislines. The two armieswere of nearly the samesize, seventy thousandmen each, but theFrench had veteran troops and more guns. The French fire weakened, and thewhole British army moved forwards and drove the Frenchin utter rout from the field. Each army lost about twenty-five thousand men. It was Napoleons last battle. Hegave himself up, and was exiled to the distant island of , where he died in 1821. The peace of Vienna, whichbrought the war to a close, gave Malta, the MauritiusIslands, and the Cape of Good Hope to Great Britain. 240.
