Melanchthons participation in the controversybrought him more discomfort than praise. Thespirit of Tubingen was still mainly subservient tothe old learning. The heresy of Luther wascombated by Jacob Lemp; and humanists andgrammarians were viewed with an evil eye. EvenSimler and Stadian clung to the old rather than ad-vanced with the new. Melanchthon was satirisedand described as a dangerous man. Hence Tubingenwas no longer a comfortable place
