The abandoned submarine Questar I, center, among the burnt remains of derelict boats litter the shoreline of Coney Island Creek in Brooklyn in New York, seen on Monday, December 26, 2011. The little used waterway off of Bensonhurst once hosted considerable commercial maritime activity but the boats and other remnants of its past are all that remain. In the 1970's with the advent of containerization smaller ports closed and owners started to scuttle and burn their old ships there until the practice was finally made illegal in the 1970's. The Questar was built by a local shipbuilder to salvage the sunken Andrea Doria ocean liner. (© Richard B. Levine)
