St John's Wort. Historical artwork of St John's Wort (Hypericum sp.). Also known as Aaron's Beard, extracts from its flowers and leaf tips are used as an antidepressant in alternative medicine. It was used to ward off evil spirits in ancient times. It is an evergreen shrub and grows in temperate regions throughout Europe and far- western Asia. The carpel (female reproductive structure), anther and stamen (male reproductive structures) and petal are seen from left to right at bottom left. Dated 1855.
