Lithograph in black on ivory wove paper The epic poems of Ossian, a third-century Scottish bard, were republished in the 1760s and quickly became popular across Europe, including with Napoleon. Hyacinthe-Louis Aubry-Lecomte made an entire series of lithographs based on figures in Anne-Louis Girodet’s painting The Apotheosis of French Heroes Who Died for Their Country during the War of Liberty, which incorporates characters from Ossian’s epics, including Swaran, the defeated king of Lochlin.
