Several thousand people from across Poland came to the city of Gdansk to protest in defense of Former Polish President, Lech Walesa, who was the legendary leader of the Polish trade union, ‘Solidarity’ in Poland in the 1980’s. The protest took place at the Solidarity Square, the location of the protest is symbolic, since in the 1980’s it was the same location of the major strikes and protests led by the Solidarity movement. The protest was organized by the Committee for the Defense of Democracy in Walesa’s defense after compromising documents were released last week by the Institute of National Remembrance in Warsaw. The documents, which were found by the widow of General Czes?aw Kiszczak, a former chief of the military intelligence and Minister of Internal Affairs (MSW) allege that Mr. Walesa was a paid communist informer under the pseudonym “Bolek” for the infamous S?u?ba Bezpiecze?stwa (SB), the communist era police. Mr. Walesa has always maintained his innocence, and has repeatedly vehemently denied that he ever co-operated with the communist regime in Poland. Controversy continues over the documents as it is still unclear why such sensitive material was kept in the private home of a deceased Polish general and why the General’s widow wanted to reveal them now.
