. Locomotive engineering : a practical journal of railway motive power and rolling stock . hthe opening nearest the front of thesaddle to the exhaust stand. The smallvalve opening is in center of a larger onethe satne shape. .As piston travels to ex-treme, the large one is pushed open, mak-ing an opening for high-pressure exhaustto atmosphere. When this steam is re- how to disconnect, or how to get enginein, in case of an accident. Breaking downon high side or left side we know we havetwo ways to get steam from boiler to lowside. One is through main steam pipe toleft chest through exhaust port to receiverand to chest. This can only be done byblocking the intercepting valve back, andis a poor way, as it gives too nmch pres-sure for the large cylinder. Therefore, block main valve to cover ports on leftside, take down that side as you wish, get on and go. You will get enough steamthrough the small pipe. If the right sideis to be taken down, cover the main valveoil that side, open the atmosphere valveor exhaust valve by admitting air throughsmall valve in cab to small cylinder in. WRECK ON .\ WESTERN RO.^D. leased, the pressure goes down in receiverand the 150 pounds of live steam shovesthe intercepting valve ahead again, andthe engine works simple. Now open thesmall valve in cab again, allow air to ex-haust from small cylinder, and a springon the small piston closes the two valvesagain and up comes the steam pressure inreceiver and pushes the valve back intocompound. In pushing these valves backand forth, they would slam and break atend of stroke, so they have put this smallcylinder at rear of saddle, with connectedpiston head, made a small opening fromone end of cylinder to the other, filled itwith oil. When a movement of valves ismade to intercept or open, the oil has toflow through the small opening to otherside of piston head. In the small openingthere is a plug that can be set to regulateflow. This saves slamming, or, in otherwords, cushions the valve. Sometimesthro
