He re-ceived a plain but substantial education in the districtschool. The simplicity of those early times . gavecoloring and shape tu his charactei, and marked hiscourse through life. Deeply interested in the mili-tary affairs of the country, he was elected at the earlyage of twenty-four to be ensiyn of the second com-pany of the first battalion, in the fourth regiment ofthe Essex brigade, of the militia of New is the record of his commission, signed by theGovernor and Secretary of State.
