H., and was educated in thepublic schools of Boston. He ser\-ed as an enlistedman in the First United States Dragoons duringthe war with Mexico, and took part in the storm-ing of Monterey Sept. 21-23, 1846, and the battle ofBuena Vista. Feb. 22-23, 1847. He afterwards served with Texan Rangers inSonora and Arizona in suppressing Apache out-rages, employed by the Mexican Governor of Dur-ango. In the fall of 1853 he was of Walkers expe-dition to extend the area of freedpm in EowerCalifornia, and participated in the affairs at I<aPaz, San Thomas and L,a
