interior of the romanesque church of the Augustinian Canons Regular monastery of Novacella - Varna, Brixen (Bressanone), South Tyrol, northern Italy.
The massive bell tower and the three-aisled nave of the Neustift abbey church originate from the Romanesque building of around 1200, while the high Late Gothic choir was built in 1470/80. The interior of the church was comprehensively redesigned in around 1740 in the present light-filled, colourful style typical of the Late Baroque era in the southern German region. Decorating the ceiling are frescoes by Matthäus Günther from Augsburg depicting the Virgin Mary as the patron saint of the church and St Augustine. The stucco-work by Anton Gigl from Wessobrunn includes numerous angels.
