Winifred Holt (1870-1945), US sculptor and welfare worker, teaching blind French officers checkers (draughts). Holt's work with the blind started in around 1901, and she went on to found or co-found the Ticket Bureau for the Blind (1903) and The New York Association for the Blind (1905). She also worked with the blind in other countries, and in 1921 was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. Here, she is working with blind French officers, possibly during or after World War I. The medals displayed by the officer at right are the Legion of Honour and the Croix de Guerre. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
