It stood at theE. end of the Forum,on the slope of the Velia, raised on a high stylo-bate above the Via Sacra, and was the largest,and among the most magnificent, at Eome. Ithad two cellae, one for Venus, the other forBoma Aeterna. There are fine remains adjoin-ing the monastery of S. Francesca. T. VenerisErycinae, was on the Capitoline hill close tothe temple of Mars : these two were vowed byFabius Maximus and T. Otacilius 217(Liv. xxii. 10). Another temple of Venus Ery-cina was built, 181, just outside the PortaCollina (Ov. .Fast. iv. 871; Liv. xl. 34). The. Temple of Vesta. temple of Venus Genetrix, vowed in the battleof Pharsalia, was built in the centre of theForum Julium, and dedicated 46. T. Ves-pasiani, was built by Domitian on the slope ofthe Capitoline hill under the Tabulariumand next to the temple of Concord; and wasrestored by Sept. Severus. Three columns(belonging to the six of the portico) with theentablature above are still standing: they arepart of the building of Domitian. Aed. Vestae,stands at the S. angle of the Forum. Theoriginal temple was destroyed by the 390, and three successive temples wereburnt in 241 , 66 and 191 Theexisting temple (preserving the ancient circularshape, the form of the primitive house) was builtby Sept.
