Kuressaare Episcopal Castle is the only intact medieval fortress in the Baltic countries. It was built mainly in the 14th century of chiselled dolomite blocks, but one watchtower dates back to 1260 and the outer walls were built in the 15th century separating it from the surrounding moat. The square building is austere from outside but shows inside a very delicate gothic architecture in the cloisters chapel and the Bishop's living quarters. Today it houses the Saaremaa Muuseum.
