A Supermarine Seafire, the naval version of the Supermarine Spitfire fighter on an aircraft carrier flight deck. The first operationally-viable Seafire, the F variant became available in 1942, which led to widespread use with the Fleet Air Arm. It first saw combat in November 1942 during Operation Torch, the Allied landings in North Africa, then provided air cover for the Allied invasion of Sicily and Italy. During 1944, large numbers provided air support to ground forces during the Normandy landings, later joining the British Pacific Fleet.
