Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO), artwork. This satellite will orbit the Earth studying atmospheric carbon dioxide. It will map sources and stores of carbon dioxide to improve understanding of the global carbon cycle. The OCO launched in February 2009, but failed to reach orbit and crashed into the ocean near Antarctica. A second identical satellite, OCO 2, is due for launch in 2013.
