The system of turnpikes rapidly extended a fewyears after the completion of this enterprise, which was subsequentlyextended to Pittsburg, as well as beyond the State line into Ohio, andalso in the east into New Jersey—thus forming a continuous turn-pike road of nearly four hundred miles. A large number of similarroads, radiating from the main thoroughfare, soon after followed, sothat the State was placed in admirable condition for travelling bystage, as well as for transporting, in Conestoga teams, the merchandize. Among these, several were particularly notedin their day for the extent of their business and the style with whichthey were conducted, among which were the Eagle, already mentioned,the Paoli, kept by the late Gen.
