The most notable tomb at Les Invalides is that of Napoleon Bonaparte 1769 1821 Napoleon was initially interred on Saint Helena but King Louis Philippe arranged for his remains to be brought to St Jerome s Chapel in Paris in 1840 A renovation of Les Invalides took many years but in 1861 Napoleon was moved to the most prominent location under the dome at Les Invalides Beneath the gilded dome of the Invalides cupola rest the remains of Napoleon Bonaparte an emperor for the French and a King for Italy Napoleon s body lies in six coffins one is tin sheeted iron then mahogany the third and fourth are made of lead the fifth of ebony and the sixth of oak All these coffins are placed within a red porphyry sarcophagus Digitally restored Art Photochrom or Photochrome is used to create a color print from a black and white photo negative using between four and fourteen lithograph stones made from rocklike substances to colorize the print with several different inks
