Edison storage-battery locomotive (see Photo No. 23), for underground haulage; whilea Ford gasoline motor is used for surface haulage. The hot ore dis-charged from the furnaces is hauled to the dumps by mule-drawntrains. There is a winze from No. 2 level to No. 9, in which a gasolinehoist operates a skip for tools and timber down to the No. 7. A25-h. p. distillate engine furnishes the Photo No. 23. Ore trains at New Idria Mine. At left, an electric storage-battery locomotivefor underground haulage. At right, gasoline motor for surface haulage. At the time of the writers visit in September. 1917, a considerablepart of the New Idria ore going to the furnaces was from the old dumpsand from quarries being opened up near the top of the hill along theoriginal outcrop workings (see Photo No. 24). The coarse, waste rockis sorted out, and the finer rock and pieces carrying cinnabar sent tothe chutes. IMaterial from the dumps between #2 and #5 levels washauled by mule-train into #5 and dropped down a winze to the chuteon #10 level. It was stated that the dump ore cost 85^ per ton placedin #10 level chute. One shift (day) only was worked here. This out-side ore supply will continue to be drawn upon except during wintermonths, when two shifts will be worked underground. An aerial tram-way 3500 long is being installed between #5 level and the furnace 8—38540 114 CA
