Homo heidelbergensis. This species of early human was first discovered in 1907 in Germany. This artwork is based on later fossil evidence discovered in 1994 at a quarry in Boxgrove, Chichester, West Sussex, UK. The Boxgrove remains (dubbed Boxgrove Man) date back 500,000 years and consist of a tibia and incisors. Artwork by the British illustrator John Sibbick.
